Born in New York and raised in Norwich, Connecticut, trumpeter/composer Steve Mercier originally discovered music through the piano, inspired by his piano-playing father and older brother. He later picked up the trumpet after a brass quintet came to visit his elementary school. Throughout his life as a musician, Steve has played with various concert bands, marching bands, orchestras, and rock-fusion units. While pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in Music and French at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, Steve performed with "Blue" Lou Marini of the Blues Brothers, trumpeter Byron Stripling, and trombonist John Fedchock. For his work in composition, he was a co-recipient of the Emil R. Weiss Prize for the Creative Arts. Steve retains a special place in his heart for the brass music that originally inspired him. While still in high school, Steve was part of an elite brass quintet selected to play for President Bill Clinton. He later led his own brass quintet, Les Cuivres du Destin, while studying for an academic year in Toulouse, France. Initially planning to attend graduate school for music theory, Steve opted instead to move back to New York in 1999 - in part to stay close to the music that sustains his soul and for easy access to live performances of all the great musicians whose records he grew up on. Steve has stayed active in music by sitting in at many of the open jam sessions that can be found around the city, composing, and playing on the occasional independent film score. When not practicing or otherwise making music, Steve enjoys swing dancing, hiking, walking around the city, and hosting parties at his Astoria studio.
